Facts about diamonds
The diamond was first discovered in India in 500 B.C., the name “diamond” comes from the Greek word “Adamas” which means unconquerable which suggests the eternity of love. The diamond is also the birthstone of April and the anniversary gemstone for the special moments of your 10 and 60 years of marriage together. Since times in ancient Greece, it is believed that diamonds and diamond jewellery were the traditional symbol of love; the ancients believed they were splinters from the stars or even crystallised lightning. It is believed that Diamonds are to be as old as 3 billion years old, which is much older than the surface host rock (Harlow). Diamond crystallisation originates (200 kilometres) which is (320 miles) beneath the surface it is also proven that Diamonds may even be found in meteorites.

The proportion refers to the relative measurements and angels of a polished diamond. Proportions determine diamonds optical properties more than any other feature. Recent studies show that the pavilion depth, table size and crown angle have a great effect on a diamonds appearance and price.

  • Princess cut diamonds – princess cut diamonds are perhaps the most popular of choice from the more fancy shaped diamonds
  • Heart shaped diamonds – the heart shaped diamond is basically a pear shaped with a cleft at the top , the heart shaped diamond  is considered romantic and these diamonds are difficult to cut and the better the skill of cutting determines the beauty of the diamond.
  • Marquise diamonds – marquise diamonds have a elongated shape with pointed ends supposedly imspired by the smile of the marguise de pompadour and commissioned by the sun king , frances Louis xiv.
  • Cushion cut diamond – the cushion cut is an antique  style of cut . sometimes it is refferd as the “pillow cut” .
  • Trillion cut diamonds – the trillions cut was developed in the late seventies . it is a triangle shape that has equilateral sides and is a combination cut of the step cut .
  • Oval cut diamonds – oval diamonds give and even perfectly symmectrical design popular among women with small hands or short fingers.
  • Emerald cut diamonds – emerald cut diamonds have a rectangular shape with cut corners it is known as a step cut as its flat planes resemble steps on a staircase.
  • Asscher cut diamonds – asscher cut diamonds were developed in 1902 by the asscher brothers of Holland. Asscher cut is a stepped square cut that is often called the square emerald cut.
  • Pear shaped diamonds – pear shaped diamonds are a hybrid cyt combining the best of the oval and the marquise shaped like a tear drop.
